What is a Heart Attack?

A heart attack occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart muscle is blocked for a long enough time that part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies. This blockage is often due to a build-up of fat, cholesterol, and other substances, which form a plaque in the arteries that supply the heart (coronary arteries).

Why Do They Happen Suddenly?

Heart attacks can seem sudden because the underlying causes, such as coronary artery disease (CAD), develop over time and may not show symptoms until a critical event occurs. Triggers for a sudden heart attack include:

1. Plaque Rupture : A plaque in a coronary artery can rupture, causing a blood clot to form and block the artery.

2. Spasm : A severe spasm of a coronary artery can temporarily decrease or stop blood flow to part of the heart muscle.

3. Risk Factors : High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, obesity, and lack of physical activity increase the risk of a sudden heart attack.
